Gratitude Activity for Kids: Thankful Pumpkins

Do Not Throw Out Those Pumpkins!

I hate waste!  After picking those pumpkins and carving some of them, we always have a few that are still sitting nicely outside.  I feel terrible just throwing them out??  Why not transition them into the Thanksgiving prep with a gratitude activity with your kids!

This is a very simple activity that brings a lot of great conversations to the table throughout the Thanksgiving season.

    Materials

  • pumpkin
  • markers
  • cup
  • popsicle sticks

1.  Create a Thankful Color Chart. You can really put any categories on your chart.

2.  Color the end of each popsicle stick and place into a cup or bowl.

3.  Take turns choosing a popsicle stick and look at the coordinating color on your color chart.  Then comes the fun!  Discuss what you are thankful from that category.  (example:  My son Danny chose orange, Place.  He told us he is thankful for our house because he feels safe from storms and lightning.  Too cute!!)

4.  Use a marker to write one or two words on the pumpkin about what we talked about.

5.  Go around the table to keep choosing the sticks and talking about your grateful stories.

6.  Continue playing each night before Thanksgiving and you will have a complete Grateful Pumpkin!

This becomes a great display for your Thanksgiving table or for the kids’ table!
